How To Lower Your Body’s Toxic Overload

Toxic load is the cumulative effect of the pesticides, hydrogenated fats, sunscreens & mosquito repellents, deodorants, toothpastes, and any chemicals not readily processed & expelled.

We hear the word “toxic” used to describe everything from chemical waste and household mold to toxic relationships with toxic people. Toxic means “poisonous” with the potential for harm or even death. Just Google “oil spills in the United States” and you will be surprised at the year by year results. Many of them are NOT reported in the news and people don’t realize their toxic effects. The sun and heat on crude oil emits benzene as well as a plethora of other hydrocarbons.Godo Chiropractic Toxic Overload

Before we think we are safe because we don’t live near an oil or chemical spill, a recent study shows arctic birds are laden with chemical toxins. Who lives in a more pristine area than an arctic bird? Scientists are measuring the excrement of arctic birds and finding heavy metals and chemicals in their waste.

Let’s be truthful, there are toxins in the air from industry and pollutants invading us from all kinds of manufactured products. But rather than getting depressed, let’s consider TOXINS and what we can do. All of us carry a toxic load. Our toxic load is the cumulative effect of the tainted environment we live in, pesticides we eat in our food, hydrogenated fats we get from fast food restaurants, sunscreens and mosquito repellents we apply to our skin, our deodorants and toothpastes or any chemicals that our body is not able to readily process and expel.

The body stores toxins to protect us and then breaks them down as fast as possible. Usually it takes several steps to break down the fat soluble toxins because the body must attach a water soluble handle to it so it may be expelled without doing more harm to the cells and organs on the way out of the body. Two factors slow the process. One is that it takes certain co-factors to break down the toxins. If those co-factors which we need in tiny amounts are not present, the body will have to find another way to either break it down or store it until the necessary ingredients are available.

The second reason is that the toxins are coming in so fast that the body can’t break them down safely. Again in the best interest of your health the body stores them until the right environment and materials are available to dismantle them. So the term “total toxic load” refers to all the toxins your body in its wisdom has stored until such a time that it can dispose of them.

Remember, your body is working in your best interest and wants to clean house and function at top speed. Here’s the important point: we all have a “total toxic load.” As the toxic load increases so do the symptoms our body displays to signal that an overload is occurring and major changes are necessary. Stuff is breaking down. So let’s say our toxic load is 40%, due to our lifestyle and diet. Next, we breathe indoor air all winter long, our house has some mold or cat hair, maybe it goes to 60%, no big deal. We consume wheat or dairy or another food that we are mildly sensitive to. Our load goes up to 80% but now it is spring and this year the pollen is excessively high. Suddenly our toxic load rises to 90% and we experience symptoms.

Godo Chiropractic Toxic OverloadSo what does that mean? “Symptoms that we call headaches, brain fog, allergic reactions, fatigue, or even painful inflammation may be our body trying to unload some of its toxic load.”

From a naturopathic perspective, if we lower the entire toxic load by eating cleaner food, cutting out the dairy and gluten, get an air purifier or whatever we need to get rid of the mold, we can now go outside without experiencing what we would call seasonal allergies.

There are several strategies to lower your toxic load. You can start by eating a cleaner source of food, drinking purified water and consulting with your wellness clinician about antioxidants, alkalizing nutrients, multi vitamin/mineral support, essential fatty acids and probiotics. Dr. Godo recommends Pro-Multi Plus (athletic multi-vitamin/mineral with high b-complex), Bio-D Mulsion Forte (vitamin D liquid), and Optimal EFAs (essential fatty acids combination) for patients as the basic regimen to health and consistent detoxification. Ask Dr. Godo about the different types of detox programs and find the right one for your schedule and budget.

I’m always amazed at how many conditions disappear after lowering someone’s toxic load with a good detox. Everyone, anywhere will get toxins. It’s inevitable. Even the arctic birds do. So if you want optimal health, ask your clinician about lowering your “total toxic load.”

Life Changing Allergy Relief

There are natural alternatives that target the cause of allergies making it possible to actually avoid completely or diminish allergic reactions.

“Do you have seasonal allergies?” Perhaps you are one of six people officially “diagnosed” with allergies. Sometimes mild, sometimes severe, people with allergies suffer the symptoms of runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing or asthma. Spring, summer and even the fall can bring on the avalanche of symptoms not to mention the waiting lines at the pharmacy. They know the drill, they tough it out every season… allergy pill after pill, treating only thImagee symptoms… finding short term relief but not without side effects.

Well if you want a way out, there are natural alternatives that target the cause of allergies. By addressing the body’s immune system and other natural functions, it’s possible to not only find relief from symptoms but to actually avoid completely or greatly diminish allergic reactions.

Allergies can be triggered by pollen from trees, weeds, and grasses. Winds carry pollen and spores through the air. Ragweed pollen travels great distances. It has been found in the air over the ocean as far as four hundred miles from shore!

But why are YOU reacting to substances that don’t seem to bother others? While there are many factors involved, the most important culprit can either be an overloaded, over stimulated or weakened immune system. It can be overloaded with toxins, chemicals, metals or what is commonly called an “excess body burden.” A weakened immune system can be the result of a deficiency of nutrients. Also increases or decreases in hormone production play a big role as well as adrenal function. Nutrients like zinc, vitamins C, D, B complex, essential fatty acids, probiotics and a host of botanicals can help feed the body to activate and rebuild glands and organ systems.

Typically, when I see someone with allergic symptoms, I always like to start with A.D.P. which is emulsified oil of oregano. The ADP’s antimicrobial properties help clean up the digestive system and reduces the immune response to seasonal allergens such as pollen, dust, animal hair, etc. I have seen many people with all kinds of allergic symptoms respond to ADP  in ways I would have never thought possible. It’s the best detox I’ve ever used. You can ask Dr. Godo’s office about the use of ADP for your allergies. Also talk to Dr. Godo about other healthy nutrients to feed the body naturally and reduce the release of inflammatory substances, such as histamines.

A phytonutrient called quercetin is found in apples, tea, onions, red grapes, citrus fruit, tomatoes, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables, and many berries. Quercetin has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting both the production and release of histamine and other allergic inflammatory mediators. Bio-FCTS by Biotics Research Corporation combines quercetin with buckwheat culture, vitamin C and other antioxidants like green tea extract and citrus bioflavonoids.

ImageI know a woman who was forced into an environment with cats, to which she was severely allergic. The day before and the day when she visited the home, she took 5 Bio-FCTS, 3 times a day. Even though the exposure was unavoidable and constant for over 24 hours, she was completely symptom free.

Also, essential fatty acids affect the health of cell membranes and have natural anti-inflammatory properties which are a major benefit with allergies. Where do many of the airborne allergens enter the  body? In the mucus membranes that line nasal and bronchial cavities. So we can support healthy mucus membranes function with good essential oils.

These are healthy and life changing ways to find relief from seasonal allergies or any chronic allergy. Instead of the same old drill, make NEW choices. Take a Wellness approach now and you may never dread allergy season again.

The “Silent” Cause Of Chronic Pain

Over the counter pain medication still dominates as the #1 selling class of drugs.  If you add into that figure the number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, we are talking about a lot of people experiencing pain and inflammation. Maybe that’s you or someone close to you. Dealing with chronic pain is like a puzzle; and the pieces have to be systematically examined until the major one is discovered.

One piece is the need for essential fatty acids. Another piece is the epidemic deficiency of vitamin D.  (As a side note:  I just found out that the standard blood test for vitamin D is the number one test ordered by physicians in the United States.)

Another piece to this puzzle most clinicians are less likely to be sensitive to is silent  infections.  According  to the journal “Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases,” a 1991 article disclosed that 70% of patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis’s are carriers of “silent infection.”  Bacteria, yeast/fungi, amebas, protozoa, and other “parasites” are an unknown cause of neuromusculoskeletal inflammation. Incidentally, when we talk about parasites we’re not just talking about worms.

Also dysbiosis is the condition of having microbial imbalances on or within the body. Dysbiosis is most prominent in the digestive tract or on the skin but can also occur on any exposed surface or mucous membrane such as the vagina, lungs, nose, mouth, genitourinary tract, sinuses, ears, nails, or eyes.

So as we piece together the puzzle, ultimately we are seeing GI dysregulation. And whether it is from allergens like gluten or dairy or the immunological battle between white blood cells and the infectious agents, the GI tract becomes compromised. Toxins in the form of antibodies, endotoxins, or even metabolic byproducts are released into the blood- stream and new levels of inflammation are mounted to combat the invaders.

One of my favorite authors, Dr. Alex Vasquez has written a great paper on this subject. He makes a significant point.  I want you to hear this loud and clear: microorganisms can cause disease, specifically pain and inflammation, even when they are not causing obvious infection.”  Dr. Vasquez lists 14 different mechanisms articulating why these organisms, we’ll call them “the bugs”, can cause serious biochemical/ immunological patterns that end in inflammation and or serious pain.

The organisms may not be pathogenic in origin but their presence causes distinct changes in physiology.  The body adapts or compensates to its surrounding and as it does, often times, healthy tissue is damaged.  This is one of the mechanisms for leaky gut and inflammation.

Also, Dr. Vasquez describes something called NF-kappaB.  It’s like an amplifier that can turn pain and inflammation up or down. “NF-kappaB activation is a major factor in the production of proinflammatory messengers and in the induction of proinflammatory enzymes.

The link between dysbiosis and systemic inflammation becomes clear: gastro- intestinal bacterial overgrowth leads to excess production and absorption of toxins. This initiates immune dysfunction and a systemic proinflammatory response. This means reducing bacterial overgrowth or reducing the “bugs” can help cure otherwise  “incurable disease.”  The beauty is that we don’t have to use harmful agents with side effects.

So what do we do with all this information? Clinicians who understand dysbiosis and the mechanisms involved look for ways to integrate this information when treating patients with gas, bloating, alternating constipation/diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome,  fibromyalgia,  chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, severe allergies, arthritis, and autoimmunity.  In fact the more unusual the case, the more we need to focus on the gut.

Medical labs have tests that can evaluate digestion, identify, and even culture the bugs to see what may be present.  This is where your Dr. Godo can help. He can order the tests or he may get you started with a detox program to reduce the overgrowth of “organisms.”

Many people are surprised at how well their body responds. Thousands of people see a major reduction in pain and inflammation without the side effects of drugs. You don’t have to live with pain. Make an appointment with Dr. Godo and see how you respond.  The point is that you can do something about pain and inflammation.

Simple Headache Treatment With Dramatic Results

“She explained that her headache was gone by the beginning of the third hour, and she only needed two doses.”

Here’s a story about a mom who had crippling headaches and how a simple treatment had quick results. A mom, who lives in our neighborhood, was on her second day of blinding, migraine pain when our paths crossed. She explained to me how difficult it was to manage three small boys when she had to be in complete quiet and darkness.

She was wincing as she related her situation. I felt so bad for her; I gave her a bottle of Biomega-3 liquid and suggested she try taking 1 tablespoon an hour for 3 hours. I learned of the “tablespoon an hour technique” from a doctor in California but had never tried it. Each teaspoon of Biomega-3 liquid has 1400 mg of EPA/DHA so a tablespoon would yield 4200 mg of EPA/DHA. That’s a lot of Omega-3 oils. I knew that high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids can have dramatic anti-inflammatory properties and that if she was consuming the standard American diet, which she was, chances were pretty good that the fish oil could break the cycle.

I explained that it may cause diarrhea to consume so much fat quickly but even the diarrhea may help to reduce toxins that the colon may be harboring. I wanted her to know that a good “clean out” is okay and actually might be very therapeutic.

Since I was giving her the oil for free, I asked her to let me know what happened. For several months I never heard from her so I figured it didn’t work. This week I saw her down the street with her 3 boys and was able to ask her some details. She explained that her headache was gone by the beginning of the third hour, and she only needed 2 doses.

She had had another bout of migraines the following month, and she used the Biomega-3 liquid again and it worked equally as well. Obviously I told her that it worked because she is so deficient in healthy Omega 3 oils, and she needs to take some every day to build up her organ reserves.

The goal for all of us is to reduce what I call “systemic levels of inflammation.” Fortunately, the high dose fish oil worked for her; but I suggested she look at some of the other factors that could be  causing inflammation. Consuming foods she may be allergic to like gluten or dairy, eating foods high in hydrogenated oils, consuming too much fructose or MSG can all add to elevated levels of systemic inflammation.

We all read bits and pieces of information or hear advice about our health, but it really helps to be accountable to someone. Work with Dr. Godo and make a plan, one that you can live with.

One way to monitor your progress is to take the Nutri-Q test and follow the recommendations for 90 days then retake the test. You will be surprised by how much better you feel when you apply wellness principles daily and take a few nutrients to restore or rebuild your nutrient organ reserves.

It’s nice to hear dramatic results like the mom with migraine headaches, but isn’t it better to experience continued health and avoid those inflammatory moments all together? Let’s not wait until we are at the edge of our health cliff before we make changes. Let’s get healthy… so healthy that our family and friends ask us what are doing to look and feel so alive.

Naturally Reduce & Prevent Oral Infections

“All of us have bacteria in our mouth but conservative numbers suggest 38% of people age 20 and at least 58% aged 50 have periodontal disease.”

All of us like to have a bright smile, healthy teeth, and fresh breath. Let’s consider what we can do naturally and effectively for our teeth and gums? Have you  experienced bleeding gums, tender, or swollen discolored gums? Bleeding signals inflammation of the gums called gingivitis which is the first step toward periodontal disease. Statistics vary but conservative numbers suggest 38% of people age 20 and at least 58% of people age 50 have periodontal disease. The risk is even higher for people in their golden years.

All of us have bacteria in our mouth. Bacteria forms plaque around the teeth releasing enzymes called collagenases that can damage and erode the gum tissues. The infected gums swell, bleed easily, recede, and loosen teeth. Tooth loss is caused more frequently by gum disease than tooth decay.

Let me emphasize again, bleeding gums signal inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a problem and is related to almost every major disease. Before we spend money to have lab tests run to measure inflammation, why not pay attention to the warning signal that is flashing at us when we look in the mirror? It’s not a sign of health to have bleeding, tender, or discolored gums.

Remember, the mouth can be a breeding ground for infection. I say “can be” because it is normal to have bacteria in our mouth. A healthy immune system keeps the bacteria in check. However if our immune system is comprised due to poor diet, chronic stress, toxic overload, etc, bacteria can thrive and create deeper levels of infection.

Consider that bleeding also signals capillary fragility. If the capillaries in the gums are weak chances are good the integrity of other capillaries may be compromised. Foods and nutrients that support capillary and tissue healing like buckwheat sprouts can help. My favorite supplement is Bio-FCTS by Biotics Research. Bio-FCTS is a flavonoid complex of quercetin, vitamin C, buckwheat culture, green tea extract and citrus fruit.

Here’s a true story that illustrates how chronic infection can provoke health problems. An acquaintance of mine had inoperable brain cancer. After being referred to a dentist who practices complimentary dentistry, he found she had a leaky, infected root canal. Once the tooth was extracted and the infection cleaned up, her body healed the brain tumor. No chemo, no radiation. That was over 10 years ago and still no sign of cancer. This case is dramatic but illustrates how smoldering infections in the mouth, when left untreated, can be a serious health risk.

So what can you do naturally to help reduce and prevent infections? Here’s something to consider; a simple therapy that could be described as “unusual.” It’s called “Oil Pulling.” Just the sound of the words “oil pulling” is a little strange. It originates in Ayurvedic medicine in India. Oil Pulling Therapy works by removing disease-causing microorganisms and toxins in the mouth that cause poor health. Dr. Bruce Fife in his book Oil Pulling Therapy – Detoxifying and Healing the Body through Oral Cleansing says “it’s nothing magical, just simple biology.”

Most of the microorganisms that inhabit the mouth consist of a single cell. These cells are covered with a lipid or fatty membrane which is the cell’s skin. When you combine 2 oils together, they are attracted to each other. By putting sesame seed oil or sunflower seed oil in your mouth, the fatty membranes of the microorganisms are attracted to the oil. As you swish it around your teeth and gums, microbes are picked up as though they are being drawn to a powerful magnet. Bacteria that hide under crevices in the gums and in pores within teeth are sucked out of their hiding places and held firmly in the solution. Increased saliva production is an added bonus as it also helps to fight certain microbes and balances pH.

When your body does not have the burden of constantly fighting off oral infections, bacteria and toxins, the process of self-healing begins. Inflammation diminishes, blood chemistry is normalized, damaged tissue is repaired and healing occurs. It’s not too late to get started.

Are your gums sore? Are you experiencing bleeding gums or do you have concerns about infections in your mouth? Ask Dr. Godo for help. More than half of all people over the age of 50 are at risk for periodontal disease. Be aware and take a Wellness approach.
