Common Cold Or Sinusitis?

“In a recent study, 87% of people who thought they had a cold in fact had a sinus infection.”

People spend millions of dollars for over the counter medication to relieve sinus infections and sore throats. It is often the drip, drip, drip, from the sinuses that causes a sore throat or even lung problems, but if we fix the sinuses, the symptoms disappear. So how do you fix them?

Sinus infections are more prevalent than most physicians realize. In a research study performed at the University of Virginia in 1993, students who thought they had a cold were evaluated with CT scans, the most used diagnostic test for sinusitis. The scans revealed that an astounding 87 percent didn’t have a common cold, but in fact, had a sinus infection!

Chronic sinusitis affects 17 percent of the adult population of the U.S. Physicians often treat sinus infections with antibiotics with mixed results. In 1999 Dr. David Sherris and his team at Mayo Clinic and University of Buffalo found the underlying cause wasn’t an infection at all  but an immune response to fungal organisms. His study showed that “fungal organisms were present in the mucus of 96 percent of patients who had surgery for chronic sinusitis, and that inflammatory cells were clumped around the fungi, which indicated that the condition was an immune disorder caused by fungus.”

As it turns out, these fungus cause inflammation and the thickening of healthy  mucus. The average human body produces about a liter of mucus per day. Nasal mucus is clear and thin. However, during times of infection, mucus can change color to yellow or green either as a result of trapped bacteria, or due to the body’s reaction to viral infection. This excessive mucus is a breeding ground for bacteria and other airborne fungi. So if we can thin the mucus and apply nutrients that are antifungal and antibacterial in nature, we can really treat the cause and not just the symptoms. If you have a problem with sinus infections, give Dr. Godo a call. He may begin by asking you to reduce wheat and dairy.

I’m constantly surprised how eliminating wheat and dairy can fix many cases of sinus infections. For example, one of my patients struggled with painful sinus infections every winter. Our results were mixed until we did testing and realized how bad her sensitivities were. When she saw the allergy test results she was willing to give it a chance and eliminate wheat and dairy. Sixty days later she was a new woman physically and emotionally. She was sleeping better, had more energy and in short, had her life back.

Also, Dr. Godo can recommend a nasal lavage, which uses salt water or iodine solutions to thin mucus and soothe membranes. Dr. Godo can advise you which nutrients have antibacterial and antifungal properties.  Nutraceutical grade vitamins, trace minerals, antioxidants and botanicals are available that are designed to feed your immune system. By taking a wellness approach, and addressing the cause of sinus infections, not only will you be fixing the problem and getting relief for the present but you will be strengthening your immune system for future protection against colds and flu bugs.

If you are ready to get off of the antibiotic rollercoaster or you are frustrated with over the counter drugs, there is a way. You’ve been through enough pain and discomfort already. Ask Dr. Godo about sinus infections and get started with a “natural therapy” that promotes clear, healthy sinuses. Not only will you feel great, you’ll breathe easier.

The “Silent” Cause Of Chronic Pain

Over the counter pain medication still dominates as the #1 selling class of drugs.  If you add into that figure the number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, we are talking about a lot of people experiencing pain and inflammation. Maybe that’s you or someone close to you. Dealing with chronic pain is like a puzzle; and the pieces have to be systematically examined until the major one is discovered.

One piece is the need for essential fatty acids. Another piece is the epidemic deficiency of vitamin D.  (As a side note:  I just found out that the standard blood test for vitamin D is the number one test ordered by physicians in the United States.)

Another piece to this puzzle most clinicians are less likely to be sensitive to is silent  infections.  According  to the journal “Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases,” a 1991 article disclosed that 70% of patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis’s are carriers of “silent infection.”  Bacteria, yeast/fungi, amebas, protozoa, and other “parasites” are an unknown cause of neuromusculoskeletal inflammation. Incidentally, when we talk about parasites we’re not just talking about worms.

Also dysbiosis is the condition of having microbial imbalances on or within the body. Dysbiosis is most prominent in the digestive tract or on the skin but can also occur on any exposed surface or mucous membrane such as the vagina, lungs, nose, mouth, genitourinary tract, sinuses, ears, nails, or eyes.

So as we piece together the puzzle, ultimately we are seeing GI dysregulation. And whether it is from allergens like gluten or dairy or the immunological battle between white blood cells and the infectious agents, the GI tract becomes compromised. Toxins in the form of antibodies, endotoxins, or even metabolic byproducts are released into the blood- stream and new levels of inflammation are mounted to combat the invaders.

One of my favorite authors, Dr. Alex Vasquez has written a great paper on this subject. He makes a significant point.  I want you to hear this loud and clear: microorganisms can cause disease, specifically pain and inflammation, even when they are not causing obvious infection.”  Dr. Vasquez lists 14 different mechanisms articulating why these organisms, we’ll call them “the bugs”, can cause serious biochemical/ immunological patterns that end in inflammation and or serious pain.

The organisms may not be pathogenic in origin but their presence causes distinct changes in physiology.  The body adapts or compensates to its surrounding and as it does, often times, healthy tissue is damaged.  This is one of the mechanisms for leaky gut and inflammation.

Also, Dr. Vasquez describes something called NF-kappaB.  It’s like an amplifier that can turn pain and inflammation up or down. “NF-kappaB activation is a major factor in the production of proinflammatory messengers and in the induction of proinflammatory enzymes.

The link between dysbiosis and systemic inflammation becomes clear: gastro- intestinal bacterial overgrowth leads to excess production and absorption of toxins. This initiates immune dysfunction and a systemic proinflammatory response. This means reducing bacterial overgrowth or reducing the “bugs” can help cure otherwise  “incurable disease.”  The beauty is that we don’t have to use harmful agents with side effects.

So what do we do with all this information? Clinicians who understand dysbiosis and the mechanisms involved look for ways to integrate this information when treating patients with gas, bloating, alternating constipation/diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome,  fibromyalgia,  chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, severe allergies, arthritis, and autoimmunity.  In fact the more unusual the case, the more we need to focus on the gut.

Medical labs have tests that can evaluate digestion, identify, and even culture the bugs to see what may be present.  This is where your Dr. Godo can help. He can order the tests or he may get you started with a detox program to reduce the overgrowth of “organisms.”

Many people are surprised at how well their body responds. Thousands of people see a major reduction in pain and inflammation without the side effects of drugs. You don’t have to live with pain. Make an appointment with Dr. Godo and see how you respond.  The point is that you can do something about pain and inflammation.

Urinary Tract Support

“UT complex has factors that can reduce inflammation, support healthy urine flow, normalize pH and has a variety of immune enhancing properties.”

Approximately 50 percent of all women will have at least one urinary tract infection in her lifetime with many women having several infections throughout their lifetime. Unfortunately for some, urinary tract infections can be a chronic problem. Over the years I have heard from numerous Clinicians that a urinary tract infection can be an underlying cause of unresponsive back pain, overall feelings of malaise or strange mental or emotional symptoms.

Sometimes overlooked, urinary tract infections, in fact, are recognized as the second most common type of bodily infection. But any infection is something to be concerned about. Finding and treating sources of hidden infections can be a big key to unlocking chronic or unresponsive illnesses.

I heard a conference call with Dr. Gary Lasneski, a world renowned health care professional, and he was talking about a new urinary tract formula that he developed to support healthy urine function, called UT Complex. He made a comment that really opened my eyes to a range of therapeutics I never considered. He said herbs are not specific to one body part. In other words, something for the lungs would probably contribute to healthy sinuses.

A product that is designed for healthy sinus function would also benefit similar types of mucus tissue, like urinary tract tissue. He also went on to say that there are no male or female botanicals. Herbs classically used for men or women are not exclusive to one gender. What I like about how Dr. Lasneski develops a formula is that he uses a 3 tiered approach.

First he uses both his biochemical and botanical knowledge to form an idea about what may work. As part of this discovery process he will hand make a series of formulas and test them energetically to see if his thinking is effective. Next, if successful, he will make larger batches himself and use them with patients for 6 months to several years. Finally, if he sees continued success, he will take the third step and ask Biotics to make a trial batch and again test to see if a manufactured product maintains its effectiveness.

If this 3 tiered level of testing continues to bring patient success, he asks Biotics Corporation to manufacture the product for clinical use. Some of his formulas have taken many years to develop but they consistently deliver clinical results. UT Complex combines chrysanthemum, cornsilk, Ahu Ling extract from the Grifola mushroom, buchu, calcium, ammonium chloride and zinc. This blend of botanicals from North America, South Africa and traditional Chinese medicine provides a unique product to safely and effectively support the urinary tract system.

  • Chrysanthemum is considered to have antispasmodic, diuretic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Cornsilk also has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes the reduction of frequent
urination caused by irritation of the bladder.
  • Ahu Ling extract from the Grifola mushroom provides diuretic as well as immune enhancing support.
  • Buchu demonstrates antibacterial and antifungal actions, and is considered an antiseptic for the urinary tract.
  • Calcium and ammonium chloride are used to regulate healthy pH.
  • Zinc has been shown to play a special role in healthy epithelial cells in the urinary tract.

Perhaps you’ve never considered natural botanicals to address urinary problems. The care and concern for patients used by Dr. Lasneski to develop UT Complex distinguishes it from other herbal formulas. UT Complex can be used concurrently with antibiotics. It can be especially effective for people with chronic infections that seem to be unresponsive to antibiotics. Ask Dr. Godo about therapeutic uses or as a preventative to avoid infections. UT Complex has factors that can reduce inflammation, support healthy urine flow, normalize pH and has a variety of immune enhancing properties. Immune “enhancing” means by using UT Complex, you are not only supporting the urinary tract, you are supporting the whole immune system; and that’s a great bonus too.
