Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?


“If you have concerns about cardiovascular health, osteoporosis, muscle cramps or low energy levels, you may not be getting enough magnesium.”

The health benefits of magnesium which is vital for healthy bones, blood sugar regulation and good circulation are well known, but new Dr. Godo Magnesiumresearch published recently shows that magnesium is more important than we thought. Dr. Dennis Goodman, one of the top heart specialists in the United States prescribes magnesium instead of statin drugs (cholesterol lowering drugs) and says “Magnesium is one of the most overlooked, underused answers to heart disease. Simply put, magnesium is one of the most essential nutrients for promoting and maintaining proper heart function.”

New research also suggests that magnesium helps restore aging brains to a younger state and is useful to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

So why is magnesium so important? Magnesium is a critical co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body. And many of them are tied to energy production. Deficiencies in magnesium ultimately yield lower energy states, which means cells can’t maintain balance, which means they are more susceptible to environmental toxins and infections, which causes free radicals to increase.

The typical American diet creates a relative acidic chemistry. Excess acids can also cause free radicals. Magnesium helps buffer excess acid because it is a key alkalizing mineral. If we are deficient in magnesium, this lowered energy state is what causes the nervous system to be compromised which means muscles can’t fire properly and spasm can occur anywhere but especially in the heart and vascular tissue.

Magnesium acts as an antioxidant and protects DNA and intracellular proteins. Over 95% of the magnesium is in the cell so lowered magnesium levels translate into increased levels of inflammation.

Any of the following three factors can cause you to be low in magnesium. First factor is reduced dietary levels. Although we can get magnesium naturally from leafy green vegetables, artichokes, bananas, certain nuts and grains, most people still aren’t getting enough magnesium through foods.

One study by the National Institute of Health showed 68% of the American population was depleted in magnesium while other experts put the number closer to 80%. Anyone in that 80% is at a cellular disadvantage.

The next factor is your ratio of magnesium to calcium. If a certain mineral is increased in your body another mineral will be decreased or displaced. For example, if you increase zinc, you reduce copper. In the same way, if we INCREASE calcium, we REDUCE magnesium.

The National Institute of Health now recommends that the optimum calcium intake be further increased to 1500 mg/day to prevent osteoporosis. This recommendation disregards the already substandard magnesium intake by most people which is less than 300 mg/day. That would bring the calcium to magnesium ratio to 5/1 which is above the 4/1 ratio of Finland. Finland has the highest ischemic heart disease death rate for young to middle-aged men.

In terms of osteoporosis, bone loss is accelerated when there is a magnesium deficiency. Most people think of taking calcium for bone health. But since calcium displaces magnesium, if magnesium deficient people take more calcium, it can further exacerbate bone loss.

The third factor is the amount of stress that we experience. Dr. Mildred Seelig formerly one of the world’s authorities on magnesium stated that “stress, both physical and emotional, evokes the release of stress hormones. Stress hormones in excess cause magnesium loss and inactivation, and can be implicated in cardiovascular disorders.”

If you are deficient in magnesium, then how much magnesium do you need? Dr. Seelig suggested a sliding scale based on sex, weight and stress. Dr. Godo can determine a proper dosage, but for “new tissue formation and repair” which includes most people, higher doses can be recommended. With my patients I suggest Mg-Zyme by Biotics Research.
