Supplement Industry “Shocker”

A recent New York Times article on nutritional supplements shocked many people. The article published revealing studies about the quality of supplements sold at several well-known “big box” stores. If you’ve ever purchased nutritional supplements from a chain retail store, you definitely need to consider the New York state attorney general’s action against Wal-Mart Walgreens, Target, and GNC. In an unprecedented action, the state has requested these stores to stop the sale of all the products in question.

Of course, until all the facts surface, I don’t want to act as judge or jury; however, some things are really clear. As part of its investigation, the attorney general’s office bought 78 bottles of the leading brands of herbal supplements from a dozen Walmart, Target, Walgreens and GNC locations across New York State. Then the agency analyzed the products using DNA bar coding, a type of genetic fingerprinting that the agency has used to root out labeling fraud in the seafood industry. Approximately four out of five of the products purchased at Walmart, Target, Walgreens and GNC contained NONE of the herbs listed on their labels. In many cases, the authorities said, the supplements contained little more than cheap fillers like rice, wheat, powdered beans, peas, carrots or house plants.

The product contained NONE… none of the herbs listed on the label. Consumers wasted their money on cheap fillers, even fillers like wheat which can cause adverse reactions, even though the label claimed it to be wheat and gluten-free.

How could this happen? The investigation was based on a 2013 study in Canada using similar DNA technology. That study tested 48 products from 12 companies and found basically the same theme, a lack of the botanicals as stated on the label and the presence of contaminated fillers not stated on the label. Critics of both studies claim that the DNA technology was not an acceptable method to determine the presence of the herbs. They say the manufacturing process itself may have disrupted the DNA bar codes. But here is what makes the four “big box” stores cringe. Using the same DNA testing methods, a 2013 Canadian study testing 44 products from 12 companies found 2 of the 12 companies DID produce DNA sampling consistent with label claims. Interestingly, the DNA testing was sufficient to determine the cheap fillers. These findings are evidence enough for any consumer to STOP and pay attention.

As for most Wellness professionals, it’s no news to them. But clinicians are alarmed by just how bad the results were. We’ve believed for years that manufacturers who produce products for retailers at such reduced prices could never have sufficient quality control. It takes a lot of time and costs a lot of money to purchase and use the sophisticated equipment needed to test the presence and activity of botanicals. And don’t think this problem exists just for the “discount” nutrition houses. Many of the so called professional lines are no more than marketing companies that often do not manufacture their own products much less use extensive testing.

The second reason is that the toxins are coming in so fast that the body can’t break them down safely. Again in the best interest of your health the body stores them until the right environment and materials are available to dismantle them. So the term “total toxic load” refers to all the toxins your body in its wisdom has stored until such a time that it can dispose of them.

Remember, your body is working in your best interest and wants to clean house and function at top speed. Here’s the important point: we all have a “total toxic load.” As the toxic load increases so do the symptoms our body displays to signal that an overload is occurring and major changes are necessary. Stuff is breaking down. So let’s say our toxic load is 40%, due to our lifestyle and diet. Next, we breathe indoor air all winter long, our house has some mold or cat hair, maybe it goes to 60%, no big deal. We consume wheat or dairy or another food that we are mildly sensitive to. Our load goes up to 80% but now it is spring and this year the pollen is excessively high. Suddenly our toxic load rises to 90% and we experience symptoms.

Supplements are taken every day as prescribed. I have had a few patients who start regulating their own supplements (usually by lowering the dosage) without consultation. In almost every case, the patient ends up in a position of very little or no weight loss for several weeks until the situation is corrected in the clinic. Missing even one dose will throw you out of appetite suppression for two or three days.  Do not adjust your own supplements without consultation and try not to miss a dose.

Count your daily calories. It is important to be exact and not guess. Guessing is the biggest reason that the patient’s caloric intake is incorrect. Use measuring cups to know what a true cup of something looks like. Use a food scale to know what a quarter pound of meat looks like. If you are not using measuring cups and scales, you are only guessing, and your results will reflect it.

There are 5 basic factors you must adhere to for a healthy, trimmer you: adequate restful sleep, regular exercise, proper diet, positive mental outlook, and sound nervous system. You are under a trained health care provider’s care, and we will be monitoring your health closely.

What is Human Growth Hormone (hGH)?

hGH is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced and increased significantly during rigorous exercise. It is also secreted in increased amounts with adequate sleep and Calorie Restricted (CR) diets. Couldn’t I lose weight just by following a VLCD?

Yes, you probably could. Medical research shows that you will, but you will lose muscle mass and structural fat. Without the release of the ‘problem’ fat, you will not reshape your body. You will not reset your metabolism so it is quite likely that you will immediately put the weight back on.

Is it safe?

Yes, current research has shown restricted calorie diets actually have anti-aging effects. Besides you are only going to be on the protocol a short time. Your body is actually receiving approximately 2,000 calories from the release of the fat.

How does the program work?

You will be on the program for 6 weeks, then off  6 weeks. You may continue if you still have more weight to lose. There are three phases to the program.

Phase 1

Loading

  • Day 1 and 2 you will binge. You may eat anything and everything; this is to help beat the hunger while the hGH reserves increase.
  • The supplements begin in the loading phase

Phase 2

Very Low Calorie Diet

  • Day 3 you begin the STRICT 500 calorie diet. Water, water, water-I recommend you drink approximately 2 liters of pure water every day. Tea or coffee in any quantity is allowed. You may have up to 1 tablespoon of milk in a 24 hour period and you can only sweeten with Stevia.

Phase 3

Maintenance

  • 3 weeks of 1500 to 2,000 calories/day. This is a very important step in the long term keeping the weight you lost – lost! Don’t cheat or try to shortcut this step. During this phase we are attempting to “reset” your metabolism.

Phase 1: Days 1 and 2–binge away and eat whatever you want while beginning your supplements. We will discuss this in your initial appointment.

 

Phase 2: This phase is 3 weeks beginning on Day 3. This is your strict 500 calorie per day diet. Will you be hungry? The answer is “No.” if you are following the guidelines without cheating. You will not be hungry because the supplements regulate the hunger hormones and chemicals in your body.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Sugar and starches NEED TO BE AVOIDED.  We are trying to use the released fat for the energy source. MSG, hydrogenated oils, and microwave food are also to be avoided.

Things to use for appetite and comfort foods: tea, coffee, carbonated mineral or spring water provides a sense of fullness. Celery with Celtic sea salt provides some crunchy oral gratification. If you have more than one carbonated beverage, take a calcium supplement at bedtime.

Weigh yourself immediately upon rising after you have emptied your bladder and without clothes.

For breakfast – NO FOOD! You may have organic, black coffee, tea, and of course water! Only one tablespoon of milk allowed in 24 hours. Stevia may be used for sweetener. Sorry, no juices are allowed.

For lunch and dinner you can have 4 approved food choices: 1 protein, 1 vegetable, 1 fruit and 1 breadstick (grissino) or 1 Melba toast. (See chart on following page.) Do not skip meals. You may have your fruit between meals if you choose not to eat it with your meal. Try to use organic food whenever possible. You may season with the following: juice of a half a lemon (you may have a full lemon every day), organic raw apple cider vinegar, white or black pepper, Celtic sea salt, basil, garlic, marjoram, parsley or thyme. NO – butter, dressings or oils.

Vegan Protocol (keep to 500 calories)
Protein Option: 1 serving of Ezekiel bread OR 1/2 cup cooked quinoa OR 28 grams raw brown rice protein powder OR 500ml of skim milk.

Approved proteins: 3.5 oz. or 100 grams (weighed raw) – beef, steak, chicken (skinless), fresh wild white fish. All visible fat needs to be removed before cooking and must be cooked without oil or fat.

Approved vegetables: they can be boiled, eaten raw, or grilled (no oil). Only 1 vegetable per meal: 1 large handful or approximately a cup of the following – asparagus, beet greens, cabbage, celery, chard, cucumber, fennel, lettuce of any kind, radishes, spinach, tomatoes, white, yellow or red onions. Celery can be eaten whenever, as it contains 17 calories and it takes more calories than that to digest.

Approved fruits: Only 1 fruit per meal: 1 apple (not 2 small ones), ½ grapefruit, 1 orange, or a handful of strawberries. The fruit or the breadstick may be eaten between meals instead of with lunch or dinner, but not more than four items listed for lunch and dinner may be eaten at one meal.

The 100 grams (or 3.5 oz) of meat must be scrupulously weighed raw after all visible fat has been removed. To do this accurately you must have a kitchen scale. The butcher should certainly not be relied upon.

It should also be mentioned that two small apples weighing as much as one medium have a higher caloric value and are therefore not allowed. Some people do not realize that a tangerine is not an orange and that chicken breast does not mean the breast of any other fowl, nor does it mean a wing or drumstick.

Those patients who feel that even so little food is too much for them, may omit anything they wish.

No cosmetics other than lipstick, eyebrow pencil and powder may be used without special permission.

Every item in the list has been gone over carefully, continually stressing the point that no variations other than those listed may be introduced. All things not listed are forbidden, and the patient is assured that nothing permissible has been left out.

Phase 3: Maintenance – 3 weeks of 1500 to 2,000 calories/day. This is a very important step in the long term keeping the weight you lost – lost! Don’t cheat or try to shortcut this step. During this phase we are attempting to “reset” your metabolism.

In this phase you can begin to add foods back into your diet, it is important you continue to avoid sugar and starches like the plague. I recommend that you add foods back in slowly and only one at a time; that way if there is a particular food that does not agree with you, we will be more likely to identify it. You can start to reintroduce fats, oils, and nuts but I urge caution with dairy for awhile yet. Watch the high sugar fruits like bananas during this phase.

Other things to avoid:

  • Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, sucrose, honey, and molasses must be absolutely avoided.
  • Starches like breads, pastas, potatoes, or any wheat products.
  • No MSG
  • No artificial sweeteners (Splenda, NutraSweet, saccharin, etc.)
  • No hydrogenated fats
  • Avoid dairy products for the 3 weeks of maintenance

The following is strongly suggested:

  • You must weigh every day. If you gain more than 2 pounds, see the suggestions that follow for what to do if you gain.
  • Don’t skip breakfast.
  • Exercise as you were prior to beginning the program. If you were not, then walk for half an hour.
  • Continue to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of pure water. e.g. 128lbs = 64oz
  • Eat organic when possible.
  • Follow a Paleo-Mediterrean diet plan. This relies on more nuts and berries along with a high quality protein. Increase greens in your diet but limit the nuts for awhile as they are calorie dense.
  • Recent research has shown that imagining one of your favorite desserts actually will lower your consumption of it; so go ahead and visualize that favorite dessert.
  • Try not to eat after 6:00 PM.
  • Work on reducing stress and its effects in your life.
  • Do not use the microwave.
  • Limit fast food and chain restaurants. Ever wonder why the food tastes the same wherever you are? It is the flavor enhancers and additives.

Recommendations after the 6 Weeks

  • Strongly consider a detoxification and bowel cleanse once or twice per year.
  • Limit national chains and fast food restaurants unless they are organic.
  • Use Stevia as your sweetener of choice.
  • Increase your exercise.
  • Get as much sun as possible without sunburn.
  • Are you eating to live or living to eat? Are you really hungry? Think about it. If you go back to eating the way you did before the program you are likely to put the weight on.
  • You may enjoy an occasional desert.
  • Follow the majority of the recommendations in the “maintenance” section.
  • Enjoy the new you! Just practice moderation in your eating habits. You will be able to eat what you want, just remember how good it feels to have clothes fit, more energy, and the endurance to live a richer fuller life!

Practical Summer Therapies


“If you increase sun exposure, you should also increase levels of antioxidants, especially people who work in the sun every day.”

Do you love summertime? Perhaps you’ve heard the buzz about vitamin D and sunshine. Let me encourage you to get outside in the natural sunlight. If you want healthier levels of vitamin D, increase sunlight with as much skin exposure as possible for approximately 20 minutes daily.

You won’t obtain vitamin D if you apply most sunscreens. Not using sunscreen means you need to take other precautions not to burn. According to most experts the greatest value in sun exposure occurs until the skin gets slightly pink.

Whenever you think about the sun, one word should stand out in your mind–oxidation. The sun is necessary for life but it also causes oxidation. Plants that are exposed to the greater amount of sun have greater levels of naturally occurring antioxidants. For example, home grown tomatoes are higher in antioxidants than hot house tomatoes. The stresses of wind, sun, and dehydration will cause oxidation and the plant adapts by manufacturing more antioxidants. My point is that if you increase sun exposure, you should also increase levels of antioxidants, especially people who work in the sun every day … construction workers, farmers, postal workers, landscapers and others. Excess exposure causes excess oxidation.

You can increase antioxidants by increasing foods with color. Also you should supplement with a broad range antioxidant formula as a part of your daily nutrient regiment. One more word about oxidation, athletes unknowingly increase oxidation. during intense exercises they are breathing and burning more oxygen than someone who is at rest or low output. Think of a cyclist, a runner, or someone training for a fall sport. Now if we add smog, sun, and dehydration the need for antioxidants increases. Also during the summer months, we need to be concerned about electrolyte imbalance. About 15 years ago I personally developed a strange pattern of fatigue, lethargy, and apathy every June; the cycle repeated itself for about 3 years. I would start out strong in May; but by mid-June when the summer heat turned up, I really found myself struggling for energy. I thought it was winter burnout, and I just needed a vacation.

What was interesting is that it didn’t seem to get bad until I really started sweating.
