How To Lower Your Body’s Toxic Overload


Toxic load is the cumulative effect of the pesticides, hydrogenated fats, sunscreens & mosquito repellents, deodorants, toothpastes, and any chemicals not readily processed & expelled.

We hear the word “toxic” used to describe everything from chemical waste and household mold to toxic relationships with toxic people. Many of them are NOT reported in the news and people don’t realize their toxic effects. Before we think we are safe because we don’t live near an oil or chemical spill, a recent study shows arctic birds are laden with chemical toxins. Who lives in a more pristine area than an arctic bird? Scientists are measuring the excrement of arctic birds and finding heavy metals and chemicals in their waste.

Let’s be truthful, there are toxins in the air from industry and pollutants invading us from all kinds of manufactured products. But rather than getting depressed, let’s consider TOXINS and what we can do. All of us carry a toxic load. Our toxic load is the cumulative effect of the tainted environment we live in, pesticides we eat in our food, hydrogenated fats we get from fast food restaurants, sunscreens and mosquito repellents we apply to our skin, our deodorants and toothpastes or any chemicals that our body is not able to readily process and expel.

The body stores toxins to protect us and then breaks them down as fast as possible. Usually it takes several steps to break down the fat soluble toxins because the body must attach a water soluble handle to it so it may be expelled without doing more harm to the cells and organs on the way out of the body. Two factors slow the process. One is that it takes certain co-factors to break down the toxins. If those co-factors which we need in tiny amounts are not present, the body will have to find another way to either break it down or store it until the necessary ingredients are available.

The second reason is that the toxins are coming in so fast that the body can’t break them down safely. Again in the best interest of your health the body stores them until the right environment and materials are available to dismantle them. So the term “total toxic load” refers to all the toxins your body in its wisdom has stored until such a time that it can dispose of them.

Remember, your body is working in your best interest and wants to clean house and function at top speed. Here’s the important point: we all have a “total toxic load.” As the toxic load increases so do the symptoms our body displays to signal that an overload is occurring and major changes are necessary. Stuff is breaking down. So let’s say our toxic load is 40%, due to our lifestyle and diet. Next, we breathe indoor air all winter long, our house has some mold or cat hair, maybe it goes to 60%, no big deal. We consume wheat or dairy or another food that we are mildly sensitive to. Our load goes up to 80% but now it is spring and this year the pollen is excessively high. Suddenly our toxic load rises to 90% and we experience symptoms.

Coca Pulse Test Identifies Food or Nutrient Sensitivities


Food “sensitivities” can be a major contributor to things like migraine headaches, dizziness, constipation, epilepsy, obesity, irritability, fatigue, sinusitis, hypertension, hives or asthma.

 

Have you ever taken a nutrient or made a dietary change hoping it would make you feel better but instead you feel worse? Were you experiencing a reaction to the supplement or food, or were you experiencing a detox reaction? Meaning toxins are on their way out; but in the process, you can feel worse. If it’s a detox process, we might want to slow the process down and tough it out. But if it is a food sensitivity, we want to stop it.

A food “sensitivity” is different than an out an out food allergy. I’m sure you have heard of people eating shell fish or some food and they have had a definite reaction. In the movie Hitch, Will Smith ate a food and in a short time his face was puffed out and swollen.

Food “sensitivities” will cause inflammation but just not as severe. In fact, food “sensitivities” can be a major contributor to things like migraine headaches, dizziness, constipation, epilepsy, obesity, irritability, fatigue, sinusitis, hypertension, hives or asthma. Dr. Arthur Coca was able to reverse these very symptoms by eliminating the foods which precipitated the symptoms.

Dr. Coca was a board certified allergist for over 40 years. Recognizing that allergy tests were limited, he developed the Coca Pulse Test. He observed that as we ingest stressful agents our sympathetic nervous system will react. One of the ways we can assess that reaction is by pulse measurements.

The way Dr. Coca did the test was to test one food at a time and have patients measure their pulse rates 30, 60 and then 90 minutes after an individual food was eaten. It involved a total of 13 tests per day. That’s pretty tough in today’s times; however, the test was later modified by a group of Naturopaths in the Northwest and is much more patient friendly.

The “modified” test makes things a lot easier. Here are the basic guidelines. Get a baseline pulse for full 60 seconds. Taste one food or nutrient on your tongue for 30 seconds, which is enough time for the body to react. Don’t swallow. Now with the food or nutrient still in your mouth, evaluate “the nervous system reaction” by re-measuring your pulse for a full 60 seconds. If the ending score is 4 points higher than the initial reading, the food or nutrient is creating stress for you.

Here is an example of how valuable this test can be. A few days ago a patient called me and was having a rapid heart rate and was concerned that it might be caused by his nutrients. He was actually kind of scared. I taught him the Coca Pulse Test over the phone, and we tested all his nutrients and medications.

We found out the culprit was a medication reaction from something his physician had recently given him. Needless to say he was greatly relieved when we found the cause.

I think over the years I’ve done this test only a handful of times when it was a nutrient that caused the reaction, most often it was their diet or detox reaction which we easily fixed by slowing down the protocol. The beauty of this test is that you can do it with nutrients or foods. You can get more information about the Cocoa Pulse Test below. Included is a form to help you track your results.

Do You Have “Hidden” Food Allergies?


I want you to hear this, because it might change your life. Most people with chronic health challenges have hidden food allergies they don’t even know about. What if I were to tell you just eating bread or  oranges could be the cause of migraine headaches? How about corn causing high blood pressure? How about dairy foods causing asthma or arthritis? Before you tell me “no way,” listen to this study that was done in 1979 and written up in one of the most prestigious medical journals, “The Lancet.”

Sixty patients with frequent migraine headaches were investigated to see if mild food allergies could be the underlying cause. The average time span of headaches for women was 18 years and for men 22 years, so these were people were no strangers to pain.

Here’s how the study unfolded. Each of the 60 patients was asked to eat just 2 low allergen foods a day for five days, things like lamb and pears. Kind of boring I know but interestingly enough, most of the headaches were gone after just 5 days.

Then each patient tested 1-3 foods a day looking for reactions. Besides headaches, reactions could also be lethargy, depression, anxiety, flushing, dizziness, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea or rashes.  When the reactive foods were avoided, there was a dramatic fall in the number of headaches per month.  Headaches were reduced from 402 per month to 6 per month; in fact, 85% of the patients became headache free. No drug has ever, ever been able to match that kind of result.

Another interesting side effect of the study was that of the 15 patients who had hypertension at the beginning of the study, all had their blood pressure return to normal once they discovered and removed the offending foods.

Here are the foods that caused reactions: 78% of the people tested reacted to wheat, 65% reacted to oranges, eggs (45%), tea and coffee (40% each), chocolate and milk (37% each), beef (35%), and corn, cane sugar, and yeast (33% each). The average number of offending foods per patient was 10; some reacted to only 1 food, but some patients reacted to as many as 30 foods. Remember, reactions are not only headaches, mild food allergies can be a huge factor in any chronic health challenge: fatigue, irritable bowel, chronic pain of any kind, anxiety, depression, even some heart conditions.

What if stopping bananas could reduce your arthritis pain? Wouldn’t it be worth it? So, how do you know if you have hidden food allergies? There are many food allergy tests available, but none of them are 100% accurate; and let’s face it, they can be costly. And even if an allergy test identifies food sensitivity, it doesn’t mean people will stop eating that food. However, if a nagging symptom goes away when you abstain from a food, and then the symptom returns when you start eating that food again, the light comes on. Pain and discomfort are powerful motivators.

Dr. Godo can put you on a simple allergen-free diet.  After a short time of abstaining from the most common food “triggers,” your clinician can coach you about which foods to add one day at a time to see if you react. It will take a little detective work on your part and may cause you to try some different foods for a while, but hey, who has the most to gain by trying? You do. You may even have some fun as you begin experimenting with different foods and new tastes.
